How about when visiting London? (I realise that you're unlikely to want to
go one holiday there, but some people do (strange but true)).

I would. If there was one where I wanted to be staying. For a looong m'way
journey overnight break - no problem. I've used the F1/MrBed/etc chains
in France for that many a time. In the UK, though, it's just not
necessary.

My main objection is that there aren't any of them anywhere I'd want to
go on holiday.

Yes, for a city centre, the location issues are lessened. But - for
example - <quick check> the Holiday Inn in Bloomsbury is £160-195 per
night for next weekend...
