Here in Oz, I think we still call them 4WDs. Not sure what to call the
2WD versions...

Therein lies the problem. Their main characteristic is that they're
needlessly large boxes on wheels. Their drive train can vary, and is not
necessarily accurately described as 4WD. Mind you, "Sports Utility
Vehicle" doesn't really capture what they are, but at least it doesn't
involve questionable mechanical assumptions.

I wasn't aware that SUV wasn't a term in everyday usage in Australia.
Probably need to get out more.
