Unfortunately I'm a) 15 miles from the nearest scrappy and b) my car is
no longer at all mainstream so finding any parts in a non-specialist is
too hard. So I run my own one-car breaker with the predecessor :-).

I remember them being very variable 15 years ago - there were decent
ones who let you loose with a spanner and charged fair prices,
break-it-yourself ones who wanted to charge extra for the glass in a
door, and ones which wouldn't let you near the cars. Obviously I
preferred the first kind, but I did wonder how long they would be
allowed to run.

(similar to MOT stations - I prefer ones who let me watch and talk about
what's happening, not just confined to a viewing area).

Wait until it breaks down.

I've tried to find a report on this I read last year. It recommended
keeping an older boiler if it was in good condition because newer
boilers, while more efficient, are more likely to break down. Some
have needed complete replacement after as little as 5 years.
