Man gets 10 years for DUI manslaughterTuesday, June 22, 2010

Jun. 22--Marc Perez pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter charges
Friday and was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison.

Perez killed cab driver Stephen Powers on Sept. 3, 2009, when the car
he was driving struck Powers' vehicle from behind "at a high rate of
speed," authorities said.

They said Perez was driving between Destin and Fort Walton Beach, at
speeds sometimes exceeding 100 mph, at the time of the collision. His
blood alcohol level was recorded after the fatal wreck at .20,
according to a news release from the State Attorney's Office. The
accident occurred about 3 a.m. near the Gulf Islands National Seashore
park on Okaloosa Island.

Powers, 49, had to be cut from his vehicle, which "was crushed, rolled
twice and came to rest on the north side of U.S. 98 near the seawall,"
according to the State Attorney's Office release.

Powers left behind three grown daughters and five grandchildren. He
had a sixth grandchild on the way at the time of the accident.

One of his daughters, Dorian Graham, called her father "the best guy
in the entire world." Assistant State Attorney Angela Mason said
Powers' family had come to grips with the sentence imposed upon Perez.
"We were satisfied with the sentence, as was the victim's family and
the highway patrol," she said. Perez, of Valparaiso, was 23 years old
at the time of the fatal wreck.

Years ago I got a speeding ticket and went to court. I asked a long
list of questions of the officer and expert wirtness.

The judge said that he woud get back to me.

On the way out, I stoped by the clerk and asked for an appeal form,
"juat in case."

I later got a letter from the court saying that the case had been
dropped.
