I bought a new cambelt for the above car from a local parts place and
went to fit with reference to the guide below;
http://www.teamswift.net/viewtopic.php?t=26588

Initially the belt they supplied came with the tensioner pulley which
I had asked for. The belt turned out to be half the size so I returned
it to the shop and showed them the original. They looked in their
Gates book and said it should have been a different belt they gave me
but this one didnt come with the tensioner pulley.

Anyway I replaced the belt and used the old tensioner pulley(it was
still in good condition and very smooth). I noticed that the tensioner
was fully backed off and not around the middle as it was with the
previous belt. Both belts appeared to be equally as tight(could just
turn the belt thro 90degrees on the longest run and both visually
looked the same length).

When the car was all back together we started it up and it sounded
good. Eventually when the car was fully warm and the revs had dropped
to around 800rpm there is a whining noise from the cambelt housing. we
removed the alternator belt to check it wasnt that and the noise was
still there.

we took it all apart again and checked the belt hadnt been rubbing on
anything which it hadnt and the tension was still as above. The car
drives fine and when the revs are over 1500 it dosent sound very
different to before.

has anyone any ideas what could be wrong or suggestions on what to
check? I'm a little lost?

Many Thanks

whining is caused by an overtight belt. since the tensioning is automatic
then it sounds like the belt is wrong. get the right belt and new tensioner
from a Suzuki shop, fit those and it will all be fine.

thanks for your help. Ive just picked up a new belt from suzuki and
will be fitting it tomorrow. Not cheap at £40 compared to the previous
Gates one at £8 but if it works then its worth it. Will let you know
how I get on.

Fitted the new suzuki cambelt and straight away i noticed that the
adjuster wasnt fully backed off anymore. Put everything back together
and the noise was gone. Thanks for your help.

and now you know why I will always try and get genuine parts, especially if
they are hard to fit!! Glad to hear it is now OK.
