The poor old Opel wouldn't have lasted ten minutes behind a triple carb'd 186, and it really struggled behind the single carb 161. -- Regards, Noddy.

Actually, the Opel wasn't all that bad... The 186 Monaros had it up to and including HG, I put one in a HQ panel van because the ratios were a damm side more appopriate for 6cyl than the Aussie BW box which had decidedly silly 2nd gear that almost nobody ever bothered with, going direct from 1st to 3rd and 3rd to 1st - sort of spoiled the whole idea of "4 on the floor". Whilst I agree that the Opel box was not the strongest thing ever made, if you actually drove it correctly rather than like an ex-WWII blitz crash box, they did sort of last. But I do remember replacing one of the shift linkages on a very regular basis which used to peeve me a bit. --

One guy at the training school had a pink LC XU-1 which spat out its gearbox. The folklore at the time was that it had the same box as the GTR,..but like a lot of folklore it was wrong. One other fella bought a LJ GTR, it had a single downdraft 202,..a bit of a let down for the petrol heads on scene who liked lots of carbs :-) Jason

The Opel was pissweak, but the Aussie was nothing brilliant either. Comparing the two would be like comparing a Sherman tank to a Vauxhaull Viva, but the Aussie could be easily broken if you pushed it. The main difference was that the Aussie had a fair chance of lasting in normal service while the Opel was a failure waiting to happen in your grandmother's car. > One other fella bought a > LJ GTR, it had a single downdraft 202,..a bit of a let down for the petrol > heads on scene who liked lots of carbs :-) The GTR's weren't much more than a standard 2 door Torana with a "racy" interior, full set of gauges and chrome wheel trims. -- Regards, Noddy.

No they were worse than bad actually to put it plainly they were weaker than David Z chances of actually getting a real root. -- Regards Dan |
