Did you attempt to negotiate a real price or did you just hump off after
looking at price tags ?

The store you went to might have been more expensive, but that's hardly the
reason for their demise. For what it's worth, when I renovated my kitchen a
couple of years ago I bought a complete package from Clive Peters, and they
were cheaper than anyone else around.

I'd also find it incredibly hard to believe that *anyone* is more expensive
than Hardly Normal :)

Unimpressed with the Good Guys in Darwin after yesterday. Wanted to buy a
copy of Win7 upgrade for someone and didn't have price on shelf, only for
full version. Sales idiot tried to quote it at $305 and told him it was
listed at only $199 at most places, even from Microsoft themselves. He went
off to get advice and came back that they could do it at $199. Told him that
their advertising was "Pay less, pay cash" so their price should be under
that. He was trying to negotiate with another salesman and I told both to
forget it and I would go elsewhere. Went straight to Wow Sight & Sound and
got it for $169. It pays to check prices elsewhere/online before going to
buy, even between different branches of the same store.

It does indeed.

Paying sticker prices for goods these days is for mugs. A few months ago I
bought all new appliances for my new house from the Good Guys down here in
Hoppers Crossing. The "package" consisted of a new side by side fridge,
upright freezer, double wall oven, cooktop, canopy rangehood and dishwasher,
and they were all Choice Magazine's top (or near top) rated appliances. The
sticker price for the lot was just under 12 thousand, but the "cash" price
was 7700 bucks including delivery and extended warranty on everything.

That was almost 1500 bucks cheaper than the next cheapest store, which was
Retrovision just up the road.
