Isn't it going to cost somewhat more than 2 billion? Perhaps the RBS can
put up the money. ;-)
The present bridge must have had the shortest life of anything similar.

The Porthmadog Cob toll was 5p until the Welsh Assembly Government
bought it and abolished the toll. At 5p it's so low that people can't
be arsed to argue about it, though I did see people arguing about the
Porthmadog oneoccasionally. The Briwet bridge toll at Penrhyndeudraeth
and the one at Penmaenpool, near Dolgellau, charge more but I bet
their traffic levels are lower.

when I went there the man just stood in the middle of the road and people
slowed down to drop their 5p in.

I noticed that not everybody paid but the collected didn't bother to stop
anybody who didn't pay

Ah, but there was an unofficial rule that if you were local, Welsh,
had a local registration, related to the collector, went drinking with
the collector and/or was a regular user you didn't pay. (I once went
through driving a liveried Plas Tan y Bwlch mini bus and was waved
through but when I returned a different collector insisted that I
paid.) They did sell an annual ticket as well - I can't remember the
price of it.
