"Melbourne" is a pretty big area with fringes ranging from Bacchus Marsh to Frankston. If you could narrow the area down a little then someone might be able to help you. > I have an 89 Nissan Pathfinder with the z24 engine, currently with bad > compression. Valve clearance is unlikely to be the cause of bad compression unless someone's adjusted them incorrectly to begin with or the engine is suffering from excessive valve recession in which case it'll take more than a valve adjustment to fix it. > Or could anybody recommend a cheap/good mechanic? Good *and* cheap one? No. Sorry. I know a few good ones and I know a few cheap ones but I've never seen a mechanic who's both good *and* cheap. Try your local yellow pages. -- Regards, Noddy.

What makes you think the engine has "bad compression"? Have you or someone else done a proper compression test? Its unlikely adjusting the valve clearances would fix a low compression problem, if the valves have had insufficient clearance for a long time then its possible a valve may be burnt out so no amount of adjustment will fix it. As you should know, the good ones usually end up being the cheapest (and vice versa). :) What the OP really needs is a mechanic who knows how to do a proper compression test, and I've I've certainly come across more than a few who didn't. ;-) -- John H

If the engine has a lot of clatter,...a sound that too wide clearances at valve-lash produces, its not likely to be the cause of your low-compresssions. Did you take the readings for each cylinder? Done with a compression gauge rated to 250 psi. Gauge either has a large tapered rubber knozzle to fit in the plug hole,..or a screwed fitting. Its imperative you hold open the throttle (wide-open) while someone cranks the engine for at least 8 revs. What were the figures? As already said,..riding or pie-crusted valves will kill some comp,..not loose clearances. Jason

And you've forgotten one absolutely vital requirement... any idea what it is? :) -- John H |
