I've often wondered why GM bothers to keep the Vauxhall badge. It has zero
cache and must cost them more money than if they just badged everything here
as Opel.

Really? That seems a bit unfair. If I buy a new car and get it serviced
down at Calamity Chris's Motors who drops coffee in the sump and the engine
blows up why should the manufacturer pay for it to be fixed under warranty?

They claim to, but there is no legal obligation to do so.

They shouldn't - that isn't a wear and tear item!

Apart from the fact that the warranty wouldn't cover that even if it was
a main dealer that broke it - it would be the dealer themselves - the
legal requirements (google for "Block Exemption") are that the dealer
must make tech info available, and that the work must be done to OEM
standards using OEM parts & consumables, and must be provable.
