Why?

I assume this is lifetime of car and not owner who may well last
another year, this is a vauxhall we are talking about.

Mate just had a Suzuki serviced (first one) which cost a lot more than my
BMW does for the same mileage service.

Well that is going to be interesting then because this point has been
legally tested elsewhere and I believe they can't hold you to that. However,
if that is the contract that the buyer signs, then I don't see why not!

Didn't Merc used to do something similar?

AIUI, it's not a "warranty" - you still get a normal warranty - but a
customer-loyalty add-on.
