Do you have any real data to quantify this? I've seen WAY too many
4WDs while off-road hunk into the dirt at the other end of a hill and
have their bags go bang to believe it's 40Km/h.

No way by any measure they were doing anywhere near that.

My speculation on the Volvo demo, is they simply didn't have them
enabled. Very plausible if it's just a proof of concept design.

Much like the Merc that did the same thing (oops, we forgot to turn it
on before letting the car go).

I'm talking about cars specifically and there are certainly exceptions, as I
said it depends on the system and age.
Cars certainly employ such systems (anything with a Bosch system for
instance, like GM, Merc and BMW, Saab etc etc where the airbag module
incorporating the sensors are located in the centre of the vehicle under the
console).
