I think that on the one habd they have been ill educated and browbeaten and on the other fed with bread and circuses enough to hinder thier ability to think rationally and clearly. Frankly I think that is part of what the TEA party is about. These are people who were not previously active who have been pushed far enough. Americans are by nature a fairly tolerant, live and let live people. It's just when you've pushed them enough they get annoyed.
