From: random_ on 8 Sep 2009 18:31 I regularly see people driving at 40mph through speed cameras in a 30mph zone in north-west London, but the cameras do not go off. Also people drive at 90mph through the cameras on the M25, where the limit is 70mph. What is the real speed limit at which the cameras are set?

It varies from force to force and location to location. My (inside) information is that the majority are set to trigger at 10 mph over the limit, although some will be set precisely on the ACPO recommendation (10% + 2mph). If you've seen the other threads on the subject you will know that European speedos over-read (on average by 8%). This means that at a speedo indicated 40mph you will actually be doing around 36/37 mph. If the cameras in your area are set to trigger at 10 mph over the limit - then you wont trigger them at 36/37 mph. I will happily drive through Gatsos at an indicated 35 mph in a 30 and 45 mph in a 40 and 70 mph on an NSL road. I've never triggered a camera yet. Kev

It varies from camera to camera. ACPO guidelines say at least 10%+2 over the limit but many are noticably higher to avoid running out of film quickly. I believe that the M25 ones are also only active when the variable limit is set to 60 or less. Also plenty of camera housings don't have a camera in them. -- Alex "I laugh in the face of danger , then I hide until it goes away"

There's a camera on the A50 at Groby, between the M1 and Leicester, that's been facing the wrong way for over 18 months.
