My driving instructor had a *manual* Holden HD 179 manual. It was a magic
moment my first drive. The instructor said he'd put a clutch in her every 6
weeks or so. The hill-starts didnt help,..what with the engine revving at
about 2000,..then he'd say "let the clutch up until you hear a change in the
note of the engine",..then release the handbrake"

Imagine 3 mins of acting as an engine brake took more than a few thou offa
the clutch-plate !!

Dad had an FC Holden at the time, and the first time I drove the old girl, I
soon realised the difference in power between a 132 grey motor and a red 179
:-). One redeeming feature about the grey motor was its inate smoothness,
and difficulty to stall it,..all courtesy of the CR of 6.9:1

The EJ was the first vehicle I drove on the road legally but I started
driving forklifts and industrial construction machinery like backhoes,
front end loaders, graders and small bulldozers at least 8mths before I
was old enough to drive with L plates.
When told I didn't know how to drive the foreman commented "you will
learn, just don't hit anything" and walked off so I had to figure it out
for myself:-)

1939 Ford
paid $40.00 as is with a stuffed steering box (14 years old)
engine torque rods were loose and they thought the clutch was stuffed ,
power packed the steering with grease and tightned the toque rods and
registered a week later ($19.00)
drove it though most of high school when I did get a licence at 15
until I bought the 39 Plymouth coupe and a mini as a daily (17)

Anyone that has more than one VW in that list with an asterix needs serious
help.
