I think it may have been a combination of four things: A lot of careful observation over many (young) years as a passenger - especially since they were just about almost all crash-boxes and and the like). A good understanding of the mechanics of vehicle operation and pre-licence-age experience behind the wheel (workshop manoeuvring etc) and road testing as an apprentice. Scrub-bashing and pushing past the vehicle's limitations in "safe areas) to experience what actually happens as well as having well above average eye/hand coordination/spatial-orientations skills. Good anticipation too. Lots of good luck - but that is largely associated to (3) above isn't it? :)
