It was cheaper to use a 4x4 push button keypad, a 4x20 LCD display and a microprocessor to run it than it was to use 8 x 8 way mechanical switches. It also allowed me to put in a serial port for remote control, several "memories" and some other useful "features" - it was just a little more code to write (and code is a non-recurrent cost, so the bean-counters love it). Oh, the other reason is emissions regs - it's much easier to get this done when you have direct control of the throttle position without some peky human stuffing things up and having to design ways around the (l)user. Of course, we can have both at the same time - just put a small planetary gearbox between where the cable attaches and the actual throttle plate and use a small motor to drive an input to it. Works for traction control, cruise, dash-pot etc etc. Do that, and the "lag" disappears while still giving the ECU full override of the drivers input. Pity almost no-one does it.
