That wouldn't have caused the failure of the operation.
They can get the oil out through relief wells.

Then go into some industry that's squeaky clean. I can't think of
one, but I'm sure that somebody can convince you that their's
doesn't pollute, use any resources, doesn't do anything that has
even the slightest risk of damage or harm, exploit workers,
manipulate debts for profit, tell outright lies for commercial
advantage, bribe, cause injury or harm to anybody by accident, ...

And bankrupt the Green industry.

Washington Post Exposes BP ties to Eco-Groups, Other Media
Ignore Controversy
...
"[T]he Nature Conservancy lists BP as one of its business
partners. The Conservancy also has given BP a seat on its
International Leadership Council and has accepted nearly $10
million in cash and land contributions from BP and
affiliated corporations over the years," Joe Stephens wrote
for the Post May 24.

It's not just Nature Conservancy either, the Post found $2
million in donations to Conservation International and
relationships between BP and other lefty activist groups
Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Sierra Club and Audubon.
...
Yet in 2007, the Sierra Club joined forces with many liberal
environmental groups and companies including BP Wind Energy
to create the American Wind & Wildlife Institute.

Ah yes, the wonderful money-go-round! It doesn't discriminate does it?

Oh yeah BP has been the green loving Oil company ever since they bought
into the Solar Panel business, had absolutely nothing to do with wanting
to keep tye cost of solar panels artificially high

A mate got back from Mackay yesterday where he just signed a long term
contract with BP to supply material to contain spills:-)
We both laughed when using BP and long term in the same sentence but
apparently BP's corporate set up is that BP in each country is an
independent entity so if BP in the US goes belly up supposedly it has no
affect on BP elsewhere.
BP used to advertise that their solar panels were the only ones made in
Australia but like many other manufacturers they moved to China so they
lost that selling point, the margins selling solar panels has dropped a
lot since the Govt $8000 rebate ended.

I'm wondering whether the Russians who've been at this super-deep well
caper for years already actually use it at sea.
Any info there?
On land at least a pond can be built if things go pear-shaped. The gases?
Yes, well.
