Yep

I doubt very much that most people are concerned about the day to day low
level risk (even its cumulative effects).

They are concerned about the possibility of there being a
once-in-a-life-time catastrophic failure. (However small this risk, it is
there)

Probably no worse than a car battery or even better due to difference
in size and weight. BTW, Lithium from the batteries can be reclaimed.
