Errr, compared to what other 4 cyl car? It certainly wasn't in the class of the Falcodore in size or power, and it had absolutely nothing over the Camry it was competing with in the reliability stakes. But hey...You were a Holden > man...you needed to believe what they said. > Wrong again. > I owned a VS Commodore at the same time...It really was a bucket of > bolts when compared. > We were talking about early Magnas, not that the later Astron powered ones were worth a pinch of salt either.

The Sigma/early Magna fiasco seeded the demise of MMAL... public confidence in their cars plummeted and they never recovered. Case in point, my Grandfather had a thing for Chrysler and then Mitsubishi, and he bought a Sigma Scorpion new when they came out. First the clutch failed and then the gearbox crapped itself and when the engine started rattling he got so pissed with it that he traded it in on a Pintara (of all things, but which never gave him any trouble) and never considered another Mitsubishi again.

Seems you got lucky with your Mitsubishi's and unlucky with the Holden's. Mileage may vary, but there is no question that the early Magna autos were weak and the timing chains were a rattley affair across the board. Can't complain though, junk like that provided a regular cash flow for our specialist Renault/Puegeot/Citroen workshop. |
