I used to do about that on my old, but quite light and high spec
mountain bike, but I did do 10 miles a night to work, and the same back,
then 50 miles of road, plus a run around Delamere forest for a couple of
hours. That was when a 531 frame and no suspension was perfect for
everything. Now I'm loaded down with long travel full suspension and has
made the offroad easier, but the road riding takes a lot more effort.

I managed 19.5mph average from Harlow to Clacton fully laiden with camping
gear for a week on a clapped out old '10 gear racer' when I was 15. Not a
hope in hell nowadays!

In Cheshire from 1975 to 2001. I cannot remember what year it was when the
CC stated that he was stopping cycle races. It was following a particular
race that I was involved in policing (as a traffic constable so that would
have been around '78). The behaviour of the cyclists was appalling, despite
them having been given a very clear briefing by the Inspector in charge of
policing the event. Reports were submitted to the Chief by everyone
involved - and his decision to prevent any further races was based upon
that.
