Porsche pay a licensing fee - as do Fiat group & Saab. That's probably
thanks enough, but I wonder if Dr Lanchester still gets any recognition
for his original balance shaft design patented in 1904 and used quite
extensively since then? Cheers

It's a Lanchester balancer. Common solution to cancelling out some
rotating imbalance. Invented in 1904.
