Based on what criteria?

It's a good balance between a prestige badge, driver satisfaction,
engines, equipment and looks.

IMHO, of course.

They do look nice , I'll give you that , but they are also noticably more
expensive than a lot of the alternatives like the Mondeo.
Also I wouldn't buy one until I was sure they were going to be a lot more
reliable than the 156.

I like the A4 estates myself but I don't think they are worth the extra 6
grand over and above the equivalent Octavia.

The 156 wasn't unreliable if you looked after it. It's just that you
actually needed to check the oil from time to time.... admittedly Alfa
fucked up the cambelt change interval, but so did lots of other
manufacturers.

They're the only two faults, really. The 159 has solved both of those,
the cambelt has been replaced by a chain on the 4-potters now.

True. They also have silly suspension settings - being far to hard for
daily use. The 159 does look a bit expensive, coming in at a grand or so
more than a Mondeo or Passat, however, the base spec. and engine are on
par with higher spec versions of most of the mainstream competition.
(Base diesel is, ISTR, 150bhp, for example)

The owner satisfaction surveys suggest otherwise

But the Mondeo is *very* heavily discounted.
An ST TDCI is only about 16.5k for example
