Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a 2 - 4 year old focus estate, 1.8 TDi, but
don't really know what the difference is between the CL/LX/Ghia/Zetec ?
Will these all have the same BHP?

Are there any other differences worth knowing, any worth avoiding?

I'm thinking of paying 5.5k to 6.5k from a dealer.

Thanks,
John

CL = Base or poverty spec
LX/Zetec are mid range, Zetec has slightly sportier spec with firmer
suspension, LX is slightly more comfortable.
Ghia is top of the range with all the bells and whistles.

Detail differences will depend on the exact year, month, and what Ford had
in stock at the time of manufacture!

The only one I would avoid is the CL, but they are pretty rare anyway. Early
cars had some minor problems, but were all fixed by 2001.

There is a dedicated newsgroup for the Focus at alt.autos.ford.focus which
you may find useful.

FWIW, I've had an LX hatch from new since '99, and am still impressed with
it.

HTH

Chris.

As others have said, it's the specification level. The CL is the base, the
Ghia the top level, the LX and Zetec are comparable but the LX is comfort
orientated and the Zetec biased for sporty driving.

The CL doesn't get double locking, which may be a concern if you've ever had
a car broken into.

In all cases, avoid cars without air conditioning, it makes them harder to
sell on.

And for the money, it's worth waiting a little bit and getting the TDCi
version. It's slightly thirstier but a whole lot "better" in every other
respect.

Indeed - the 1.8TDi (or TD DI if you will) isn't a *terrible* engine,
and it's reasonably economical, but it's really not all that great
either. And the oil coolers are known to crack across the ports, giving
head gasket like symptoms (sludge), thus messing up the cooling system,
and every garage telling you the head gasket's gone when it actually
hasn't.
