But other's a point for the passport - it's so that they can implement a
system of machine authentication for immigration control [1]

What possible circumstances are there where a machine will have to match you
with the photo on you DL?

The auto-recognition isn't against the photo (or even an encoded version
of it) - it's against other pre-provided biometric information. Irises,
in the case of Heathrow.

bit of paper as well as the licence.

Eat lots, get very fat, especially around the middle, then get type 2
diabetes. After about 5 years of diet and then pills, you will be on
insulin. Then you get a 3-year photocard licence for free and you can
throw away that nasty pink fold-out thing.
