Like most things these days we cater for the lowest common denominator,
so many things get banned because sensible people are treated the same
as the chronically stupid.

I used to have a dyna ute with the tank taking up space in the tray. it
was so early in the piece that the tank did not have a float cutoff It
was vent filled like small bottles) I usually did not bother, never
filled it over 80%. I fitted a take off valve in the liquid takeoff and
filled all my small bottles from it all done in the open air.(removed
the valve at rego time)

I do that all the time.

I have an old 80 litre car tank that's fitted to a custom made cradle that I
slide into the back of my ute and fill it at the local servo. Once full I
take it home, put it in it's spot in the back shed and then use it to fill
my BBQ bottles.

Now that raises an interesting question. Does LPG "go off" like petrol if
stored for too long?? Whilst that is a great idea, given the cost of
refilling barbeque bottles, but unless you have a lot of barbeques, it
sounds like a lot of overkill to me, especially if the LPG does go off. A
normal caravan sized bottle we use for our barbies lasts anything up to
12months given we have very few in the winter.
