It's an automatic 12 month ban for a D/Driving offence.
Only rarely is it reduced and only then because of any exceptional
circumstances.

exactly. Prime Minster's and Ministers are way underpaid compared to
public sector executives. Public sector executives appear underpaid
compared to similar sized private sector operation executives.
At one time that was mitigated by security of tenure, that went some
years ago, if the remaining benefit, good pensions, goes, the public
sector will struggle to get good execs unless it pays market rate.
