Yeah well fair enough.....

I certainly wouldn't ever try to argue that they were "wonderful" and I
must admit to having forgot about the distinction between the
commercial and the rest variants of the aussie box.

But, I never broke one, mind you, to be fair it probably wasn't in the
car long enough to break anyway....

Somebody mentioned Vauxhal Vivas. I once had a girlfriend who had one
of the early Toranas that was nothing more than a rebadged Viva.
Complete with the most gutless little engine it's ever been my
misfortune to drive behind, and the poor thing had a trimatic into the
bargain.

I remember going up to Paluma in it one day, and most of the morning is
what it took, locked in 1st gear revving its ring out.

Coming down wasn't much faster either, the teensy little drums cooked
by about the third corner, so it was downhill all the way in first,
revving its ring out as well.

as did so many people that you'd probably get a bit for them from idiots
who pay ridiculous prices for early monaros. frankly, I'd rather put up
with a 2 speed (with a stock 186) glide than an opel.

Oh yes,..the Vauxhall Viva was a UK product but Vauxhall had been taken over
by GM, so GMH rebadged the small Vauxhall and called it a Torana. My Dad
almost bought a LC 4 cylinder Torana. I said to him "look at the motor, its
tiny". They used to get very noisey in the pistons and the gearboxes used
to get real noisy in 2nd as well,..terrible cars. A family friend bought a
LC 4 cylinder and after about 12000 miles, he put it in to have the front
wheels balanced on the car,..they gave it back saying the ball-joints were
so worn it was impossible. The other oddity, was the sign on the
diff-housing warning not to jack the car up by the diff-centre, the belief
being the axle-tubes could bend!! Yikes! Wonder why no-one restores them
:-)
