would the same apply to the passats and bora's too. this is a genuine
lomiler with mot certifs etc. not read anywhere else about iffy turbos yet.

More on the 2.0 than the 1.9, and on high mileage ones on the long
service intervals even more so, and yes, traetment you decribe won't
help. The 1.9, serviced regularly, has no more turbo problems than any
other TD really.

There is a way, depending on the engine ECU fitted. There's a function
in VAG-COM/VCDS called EDC15-16 mileage. This interrogates the engine
ECU, and adds up the mileage from there. This should match the intrument
mileage within 10% or so. It doesn't work on everything- it worked on my
fabia, and on my Leon though.

The engines are common across VAG cars, so yes, but see my reply above.

The Mk2s with the PD140 engines suffered from failed bearings.

The Mk1s suffer from clogged up variable vane mechanisms - they can be
stripped and cleaned though dealers always want to just swap the turbo.

Mine had failed bearings at 55k and wasn't driven like that.

Not just Octavias - all VAG cars with that engine.
