Yep , I'm sure most side street small dealers have an equally suspect side
street small garage where MOTs can be obtained irrespective of the car's
condition.

Insist on it being tested at a garage of your choice , somewhere that has no
vested interest

I'm not too sure a dealer will do that on a sub �500 car.

Many dealers have a "relationship" with an MOT station that includes
substantial discounts.

Not just dealers/traders, but almost any non-MOT garage will have a
relationship with a tester. For example, my friend's workshop pays �35
instead of the normal �50 - 30% discount. That's before the time/hassle
factor of getting them collected/dropped off.

If there's any suspicion of whether a test's hooky or not, just ring VOSA
and tell them.
