Hmmm... alive and well after being abducted by aliens more likely than
drowned perhaps! However his successor (Gorton) was subsequently
deposed around mid term IIRC. His party lost the next election.

The other precedent might be Hawke, who reneged on a succession deal,
threw a tantrum and resigned IIRC. His party barely won the next
election.

Oppositions don't win elections....Governments lose them. In otherwords,
Rudd is so far out of reality with the Aussie voter, wouldn't matter who was
the opposition leader, they will take the reigns.....unless Rudd allows the
illegal immigrants a vote, there's enough of them to save him.

Agree and I have no problem with his belief but I do have a problem when
he or anyone else starts shoving his beliefs down our throats.
My wife makes Abbott look like an atheist, she's a church elder and
spends more time at church functions than she does at home but that's
not entirely a bad thing:-)
My 2 closest mates call themselves Christians and are regular church
goers but they will be ex friends the moment they try preaching to me,
fortunately in the approx 25yrs I've known them its never happened.

Bob Hawke pushed out the previous leader (Hayden?) to get the top job
and if I recall correctly won the election?
