There is only a little time to get a message across. Too quick for you:
Skaife, an Order Of Australia medal recipient in 2004, said
the Brumby Government and police should focus more on dodgy
drivers rather than speeding.

"We must encourage young people to drive safer, in newer
cars, encourage the Government to design better roads and
safer roads and our driver-learner system has to get
better," he said.

Gosh. Does he have to say "like in Germany"? Oh:

Skaife, who recently returned from a five-day driving safety
study tour of Germany, said the mentality of Australian
drivers needed to change.

>* He failed to push for strict power/weight ratios for young drivers.

It's a meaningless measure. Pointless exercise. It can produce no
positive outcome while inconveniencing lots of people and making
young drivers go out and buy another car as they're not allowedto
drive the family one.

Australia's population occupies not much more area than Germany's.
Although e.g. all of Germany fits into WA 5 times, only a few percent
of WA's area is populated. In Germany; you have trouble finding
places that are more than 3 km from the next town.

There are over 40 million registered cars in Germany, and they get
a few million extrain transit traffic at any time (except Sunday).

The MAJOR difference in population distribution is that Germany is
highly decentralised. Most people don't work in a "big smoke". All
but a few Germany cities are conurbations of largely independent
towns that have grown together. That substantially alters the daily
travel habits; as well as a tax rebate for those who have to commute
a long way between home and work.

>* He failed to mention that Germany has a stunning public transport system.
>Australia does not.

Germany doesn't have a "stunning" public transport system.
It's expensive and fragile. I decided to stop relying on it for
other than "CBD" trips after spending far too many hours waiting for
trains, and having to walk *briskly* for up to an hour to get where
I wanted to, from the nearest train/tram/bus stop.

I didnt see the show, but he IS pushing for harder licensing..

You can still kill yourself in a datsun 180b at 110kmh....

Lucky he was talking about VICTORIA, and not Australia then, eh?

What public transport takes you to , say, Dargo?

I support his ideas to some extent, although I think 140 is a bit much.
Geelong Rd/Princes hwy is screaming for a higher speed limit.
It's currently 100 kmh, dead flat, at least 3 lanes both ways, and up to 5
lanes in some areas..) nearly dead straight, has oncoming traffic protection
(cheesecutters), and a shitload of fixed speed cameras.

Princes Highway/Freeway between Warragul and Traralgon is 2 lanes both ways,
twisty in parts, undulating over the whole lot, poor quality road surface,
no protection from head on traffic in parts, and is 110kmh.

Why is that?

Who knows, many speed limits make no sense, some too low many too high.

I know, but thats what I'm getting at.... since lives depend on it, perhaps
they should make sence?
