My car is at it's most economical at around 65mph cruise, according to the (reasonably accurate) fuel computer. > There are enough other lanes to get past someone who is driving slower > than the speed limit (note that it isn`t a target). True, however there is a very compelling argument that a vehicle doing a speed way below the prevailing traffic speed is a safety risk. > I do 60 on motorways as a general rule because I drive 2000 miles a month > and have to pay for the petrol out of my own pocket, not on expenses. > 60mph makes a VERY big difference to my fuel bill. Does your time have *no* value? > That way if you want to drive faster than you can do, but you pay more > for the extra damage you do to the environment. Hmmm. Perhaps we should have a very straightforward way of relating that extra cost directly to the amount of fuel used? Maybe we could just put a shitload of tax onto the basic cost of the fuel. Hell, if the government *really* wanted to rake it in, they could even then charge VAT on top of that tax... Nah, it'd never be acceptable to the public...
