I assume that you are refering to the variable speed cameras.

These only work when the speed limit is reduced to below 70mph. I have used
the M42 and M25 many times when there are no restrictions showing and never
received a ticket for going faster (quite a bit faster) than 70mph.

How much faster? They're rumoured to be set ~95+.

I've done the M42 somewhere between 95 and 100mph through the variable speed
limit section. Usually at about 4.30am.

Thanks for the replies. One of the most frustrating things on the US
interstate system is the lack of lane discipline. I can't count the
times I have been stuck behind two drivers, side-by-side, both doing the
same slow speed on a nearly empty road. It sounds like as long as I
stick with the flow, I should be fine.
