if she wants to give me $2k for my beat up '90 Laser she is welcome, I don't
want to trade it for another car, just get rid of it as it is starting to
cost a bit to keep on the road :-)

If it's a Statesman then surely it'd have to be north of 10l/100km on a good
day. It would be closer to 15 or more with the stop start city driving that it'd
mostly get.

That sounds a bit optimistic.

The problem with this idea of Gillards is that most people who drive these older
cars probably do so because they cannot afford new ones. And that is what this
election promise is about. If they can't afford a new car now, $2k (after
purchase) will not allow them to afford it later on.

And if they do get this rebate chances are that it won't go back into paying off
the high interest loan for the car, but perhaps into other things.

And what's the bet that the price of cars go up accordingly?

**Pessimistic, actually. I've managed 7.1L/100km on a long trip, with the
cruise control on.

**The whole thing is just silly. My point was that just because a car is
old, it does not necessarily possess poor fuel consumption figures. An old
car, properly maintained (which mine is) can attain very impressive fuel
economy. Compared to a (say) new Land Cruiser, my VP is a stunningly
economical vehicle.

**OK. And your body shape is representative of what proportion of the
general population? What proportion of the general population can fit into a
Prius (given my 192cm tall mate fits into one comfortably)?

Get the idea?

Car designers disign their product for where they can maximise profits -
Make the vehicle large enough for most of the people, whilst not making the
thing too big. If you, like my sister, falls outside the average range, then
you need to look at a specialist vehicle.

Most pollies will easily fit into a Prius (as will 90% of the poulation).
