I've been offered the option. I tell them to stick it.

The fuel they offer is usualy charged at less than pump prices BTW.

Previously Hertz have always taken a copy of my credit card in case
the hire car was returned with less than a full tank. I always filled
it up at a cheaper rate than they charged before handing it back.

This time we had to pay for a tankful of fuel up front and told that
we could return the car empty, but with no refund for any remaining
fuel. It takes many hundreds of miles or kilometers to use up a
tankful of fuel! We did, just, but only because our holiday
destination was over 200 kilometers from the airport and we also went
on one long sight seeing trip on a rainy day. I would imagine that
many customers would lose out badly.

Well, in future, do what the sensible people do - and avoid the big
expensive companies like the plague!

If you want to pre-book before departure - use Holiday Autos. I have always
pre-booked with them when going to the States - but have also checked prices
at other on-line rental 'brokers' before doing so. So far they have always
come up with the best price - and the booking has been with Alamo in the
States.

No, it is done as a deliberate ploy to attract those silly enough to
be drawn by the lure of cheapness. Those who know the price of
everything and the value of nothing. It works very well.

Are you sure that this was compulsory and not just the result of you not
negotiating hard enough.

IME of travel to the US, this scam is now quite normal as the staff are
primed to make it seem like it's expected of you, but it's not.
