So what would you do when you come across a mandatory 30 limit on a motorway?

Never seen one, lowest has always been 40 at any road works and if you have seen one then you better point the people who imposed it to the motorway regulations which are completely different from those for other roads. Still waiting for you to point me to the bit in these "motorway regulations" which says "Minimum 40".

Surely not a permanent 30mph limit on a motorway? More likely a temporary 'queue ahead' electronic sign, which of course overrides any other 'normal' limits? The republic of Ireland has a minimum speed on motorways and there have been various calls for it in the UK, but we don't have one. There are (at least, used to be) signs in the highway code for minimum speed limits, but I don't know of them being used anywhere. There are cases of people being fined (don't know what charge - some variation on 'unsafe driving') for driving too slowly on motorways, but its rare and only when the driving is deemed to be a hazard to others.

Traffic which is not capable of 40mph is not allowed on the motorway - that's not the same as having to maintain that speed. -- Ian D |
