I learned to drive in a Ford Thames tray truck which was my old man's at the
time. Mum had an early 60's Mini which I was "sneaking" around the block by
the time I was 12 or so.

I owned my first car at 12, which was a 1958 Star model Customline that I
bought from an uncle with money I'd saved from my paper rounds and various
other odd jobs.

My wife was offered the option of an auto on her last couple of new cars
but just gave me a dirty look and said no way.
For her next car in a couple of years she wants a WRX or a Liberty GT:-)

Was it an automatic Nod? Reason I ask is my mate's oldman had a manual Star
model with the 273 (I think) V8. He was able to borrow her,..and at the
lights, he'd put her in 2nd, bring the revs up to about 2500, slip the
clutch by slowly raising the pedal. Very few cars back then (1970) could
beat the old girl,...not good for the clutch!
The autos were 290 odd cubes?
