You're pretty much correct... a bit of googling reveals all.

The common name was a hangover from the Triumph Cycle Co (originally a
bicycle manufacturer) which also moved into motorcycles at some point.
They bought the Dawson Car Company in the early 1920's, which produced
cars under the Triumph name until it was renamed the Triumph Motor Co
in 1930. Triumph Cycle Co was sold off in 1936, and subsequently
renamed Triumph Engineering Co. IIRC BSA acquired it around 1951.
Standard Motors never owned the motorcycle manufacturer.

Triumph Motor Co eventually went into receivership and was sold in
1939. Standard Motors acquired it in 1944, Standard Triumph was
formed in 1945.

Triumph Cycle Co had purchased the original car manufacturer, which
always operated as a separate entity AFAIK. Triumph Engineering Co
(the motorcycle manufacturer since 1936) never had anything to do with
cars.
